DragynWulf: What made you decide to include Taskmaster in one of your stories on IRON
MAN?
Bob Layton: Since Taskmaster was an original David Michelinie creation and my run on Iron Man as writer was an extention of what David and I had started on our second run, it seemed like a good fit. Also, I wanted to explore the origins of Spymaster and David and I had discussed this particular aspect of that character being a former student of the Taskmaster.
DragynWulf: In the story you hinted that Taskmaster knew the original Spymaster. Did you intend for him to have trained the original Spymaster as well?
Bob Layton: Yes. The concept was that Spymaster was more of a franchise that an individual creation.
DragynWulf: Was it difficult to write a character that could duplicate any fighting style that he has watched?
Bob Layton: Not at all. Imitation is, after all, the sincerest form of flattery. :)
DragynWulf: You are one of the few writer/artists that have both written and drew
Taskmaster in the same story. Did you find this difficult when writing and drawing the story?
Bob Layton: No. I really enjoyed it and I was always fond of the character's design. I thought he was really cool and David's concept for him was totally unique.
DragynWulf: Did you enjoy writing and drawing Taskmaster?
Bob Layton: Yes.
DragynWulf: Given the choice, would you prefer to write the character or draw the character?
Bob Layton: Write. I've always considered myself a writer who dabbles in art, instead of the other way around.
DragynWulf: What was the hardest part of drawing the character for you?
Bob Layton: Getting the expression on the mask in relation to the character's dialogue.
DragynWulf: What was your favorite image you drew of him?
Bob Layton: I didn't draw enough of him in my story to have a particular fav. Sorry.
DragynWulf: What are your thoughts on a character like the Taskmaster?
Bob Layton: Totally original and kind of fun to play with as a writer and artist.
DragynWulf: If given the chance, would you use the character again?
Bob Layton: Absolutely! But it's not likely that the opportunity will present itself.
